Although the subject of this book has been much to the fore during recent years, the science and engineering associated with it have been little known by those not intimately in contact, and those who have would probably agree that until a few years ago it was on a far from firm foundation. Undoubtedly great strides have been taken since the spur of space flight has been applied and the present volume confirms this throughout its eight hundred odd pages.
