Significance

Bardella, the RN's first leader outside the Le Pen family, defeated Louis Aliot by 85% to 15% of votes cast in a party election. Bardella was the favoured candidate of Le Pen, who will remain the party’s de facto leader. His election as party chair risks fuelling divisions between the party’s northern and southern factions.

Impacts

President Emmanuel Macron is unable to run again in 2027, and Le Pen stands a good chance of winning that election.

Bardella will make a strong push towards uniting Eurosceptic nationalist parties under a more cohesive platform to challenge EU rules.

If a more nationalist figure becomes leader of the centre-right Republicans, right-wing momentum for challenging EU laws will rise.
