Personal development programme for men

Keywords Men,Development, Workplace learning

Is personal development a man thing? The Springboard Consultancy believes it can be. The company recently launched the Navigator men’s development programme for non-management men in the workplace.

The finished programme follows two years of researching, extensive piloting in blue-chip organizations and full evaluation, and it primarily targets men in non-managerial roles. It grew as a brother programme to the award-winning Springboard Women’s Development Programme, which has reached over 100,000 women in 13 countries worldwide and has been running in the UK for over a decade. Many organizations and individuals had sought an equivalent programme for men, particularly one dealing with similar issues to those in Springboard and meeting the same high standards of development training.

Navigator deals with both work and personal issues, including key elements such as goal setting, balancing home and work, communication skills, dealing with change and perhaps most importantly challenging expectations and assumptions about men.

One of the main comments from evaluations is that Navigator proved to be an"eye-opener", helping participants to realize that for much of the time they were conforming to a stereotype that actually didn’t suit them. Navigator looks at the issues affecting men on the verge of a new millennium, and is designed to deal with these issues in an enjoyable, practical and effective way.

Organizations such as the MCL Group, NatWest, BT Mobile and the University of Cambridge have been involved in the developmental and pilot stages, and the feedback has shown strongly that personal development is indeed a "man thing" and that this is just the programme to prove it.
