Purpose

This study aims to examine how spiritual leadership influences frontline employees' (FLEs) green creativity in the hospitality industry, focusing on the mediating role of meaningful work and the moderating role of harmonious environmental passion.

Design/methodology/approach

Time-lagged data were collected from two sources – FLEs and their supervisors – across various hotels and restaurants. The hypothesized relationships were tested using structural equation modeling.

Findings

Spiritual leadership is positively associated with FLEs' green creativity, both directly and indirectly through meaningful work. Harmonious environmental passion strengthens the relationship between spiritual leadership and meaningful work, resulting in a conditional indirect effect on green creativity, although this effect is relatively modest.

Practical implications

Organizations can promote green creativity by fostering spiritual leadership and enhancing meaningful work. Encouraging environmental passion may further support these outcomes.

Originality/value

The study integrates spiritual leadership, meaningful work and environmental passion to explain how and under what conditions leadership relates to green creativity in hospitality.
