Table 2

Strength and Weaknesses of Mixed Designs

Strengths
  • Quantitative data can be used to add precision to words.

  • A broader range of research questions may be answered that both test theory and generates or confirms theory.

  • The strengths of one methods can be used to off-set the weaknesses of the other method.

  • Can provide for stronger inferences through the convergence of findings.

  • Can provide insights that would be missed with the use of a single method.

  • Can be used to increase the generalizability of the findings.

  • A more complete picture can be generated through the research process.

Weaknesses
  • Can be difficult for a single researcher to execute both methods in a study since researchers generally possess expertise in a single method.

  • Research becomes more time consuming due to the extra data, especially the qualitative data, collected.

  • There are details that still remain to be worked out regarding mixed approaches to research that relate to paradigm mixing, the possibility of interpreting conflicting results, and the like.

  • Researcher has to learn about multiple methods and understand how to appropriately mix them (adapted from Johnson & Onwuegbuzie, 2004).
