Quantitative data can be used to add precision to words. A broader range of research questions may be answered that both test theory and generates or confirms theory. The strengths of one methods can be used to off-set the weaknesses of the other method. Can provide for stronger inferences through the convergence of findings. Can provide insights that would be missed with the use of a single method. Can be used to increase the generalizability of the findings. A more complete picture can be generated through the research process. |
Can be difficult for a single researcher to execute both methods in a study since researchers generally possess expertise in a single method. Research becomes more time consuming due to the extra data, especially the qualitative data, collected. There are details that still remain to be worked out regarding mixed approaches to research that relate to paradigm mixing, the possibility of interpreting conflicting results, and the like. Researcher has to learn about multiple methods and understand how to appropriately mix them (adapted from |
