Key technical requirements

1The location of the test piles must be representative of the range of ground conditions and proposed depths for the production piles.
2The construction methods for the sacrificial test piles must be representative of the construction method proposed for production piles.
3Test pile must be loaded to 2 × highest ULS (i.e., Ultimate design action effect, S* in AS2159 and AS5100.3 terminology) or 3 × working loads of production piles. Half of this load upwards and half load downwards.
4The contractor must, by remote inspection of sockets, verify that the side walls and base of the socket is consistent with design assumptions. Inspection of the side walls and base of the socket must be carried out using a remote sensing technique capable of distinguishing between the actual base material and the detritus on the base. The remote sensing technique used by the Contractor must be capable of identifying debris deposited at the rock socket base and estimating their thickness in low to zero visibility underwater condition. The contractor shall nominate the cleaning tool and provide evidence of effectiveness in cleaning out debris in similar foundation types to the principal before applying the technique.
5Pile integrity testing must be undertaken for all bored-in situ test piles.
6After each test, the contractor must prepare a report summarising the test results (including load-displacement curves for both end bearing and side shear movement) to confirm the appropriate design parameters for use in the design of the permanent piles. In addition to complying with the requirements of the contractor’s specifications, the inspection report on sockets of cast-in-place test piles for the New Bridgewater Bridge must include shaft profile/roughness measurements. These shall be used to demonstrate that the design intent is not compromised by shaft collapses. This is particularly required in piles that are designed to develop shaft load bearing capacity in conglomerate or Brecciated geological deposits.
