Condensed research protocol

PartResearch activityRespondent – PositionCompanyInterview/focus group (duration)
Part 1 – An introduction workshop
  • (1) General introduction to the study, including its purpose, the research design and the data sought

  • (2) Presentation on the SLTs and their implications for ROI to increase the respondents' understanding of SLTs and create a common understanding

  • (3) Opportunity for the respondents to ask any initial questions

  • (4) The workshop was audio recorded and the researchers listened to the entire audio file in order to identify any possible misunderstandings

Part 2 – Combined individual and group interviews
  • (1) Semi-structured interviews on each SLT's implications for the three absolute measures related to ROI

  • (2) Used the interview protocol consisting of 36 questions per interview. The 36 questions were based on the same formulation, where only the SLT (E, I, S, D, AS, AD), absolute measure (revenue, cost and investment), and reduced or prolonged were changed until every possible combination was asked. The questions were “IfE/I/S/D/AS/ADis prolonged/reduced, what are the implications for revenue/cost/investment?”

  • (3) Probing questions to follow up on interesting leads

  • (4) Audio recordings transcribed and notes taken during interviews were analysed (within-case) after each interview

  • (5) Offered the respondents the opportunity for further comments and clarifications (data checking)

  • (6) Cross-case analysis using the results of the within-case analysis

Part 3 – A workshop dedicated to discussing and further analysing and updating the results of the cross-case analysis
  • (1) Presentation of the results of the cross-case analysis

  • (2) Opportunity for the respondents to provide their feedback on the results and discuss them with one another and with the researchers

  • (3) Probing questions to follow up on interesting leads

  • (4) Audio recording transcribed and used to further analyse and update the cross-case analysis

  • (5) Compared the results with the conceptual module (pattern matching)
