To reduce emissions considerably, future bans need to be complemented by carbon pricing. The figure illustrates that a future ban on its own is no guarantee for sufficient emissions reduction. As reflected by the areas under the curves, total cumulative emissions can come out much higher for the ban alone than when it is complemented by carbon pricing. The broken curve illustrates that without effective and stringent policy, there is moreover a serious risk that the target will not be reached in time.
