The diagram illustrates the management of healthcare waste (HCW) flows in Beira. Healthcare waste is segregated into black bag waste (BSW) and common waste. BSW is further categorized into anatomical, infectious, sharps, pharmaceutical, chemical, and radioactive waste. BSW is stored internally in healthcare facilities (HCFs). All BSW produced in public and private HCFs is collected and transported to the incinerator at Beira Central Hospital (BCH), the only treatment plant in the city. The Municipal Cleaning and Beautification Company (CMB) is responsible for collecting and transporting BSW from some public HCFs and a few private ones. Public HCFs not included in the CMB collection service practice open burning, while private HCFs must transport their BSW using private means. The final destination for ashes from incineration and common waste is the municipal dumpsite.Diagram of the management of HCW flows in Beira.
