A combined bar-and-line chart of quarterly data from 2009 to 2021. The vertical axis, labelled “Number of articles”, runs from −20 to 40. Stacked bars show the number of housing market articles published in each quarter, with the lower blue segment giving positive articles and the upper orange segment negative articles. Total quarterly volume ranges from about 5 to 35 articles and rises over the period: quarters between 2009 and 2012 typically contain 10 to 23 articles, whereas quarters from 2016 onwards frequently exceed 25, with the largest totals of about 32 to 35 in 2016 and 2021. Negative articles form a small share throughout and are absent altogether in several quarters, particularly from 2013 onwards. Two lines plot the change in volume from the preceding quarter: a blue line with circular markers for the change in the number of positive articles, which fluctuates between roughly −17 and +13 and shows its largest swings at the end of the period, and an orange line with triangular markers for the change in the number of negative articles, which stays close to zero throughout, between about −8 and +5. Values read from the chart are approximate.Distribution of positive and negative news articles and quarterly volume change. Source: Authors' own work
