Figure 2.
Ten maps trace Auckland’s urban expansion from 1842 to 2018, alongside the development of motorway and rail networks. The ten maps trace Auckland’s urbanised area across 1842, 1871, 1915, 1945, 1964, 1975, 1984, 1996, 2008, and 2018. In 1842, the urbanised area is limited to a small central location. By 1871, growth appears around this initial area. The 1915 map adds growth from 1871 to 1915 and introduces the rail network. By 1945, urbanisation extends farther around the centre and along several corridors. The 1964 map distinguishes growth from 1945 to 1964 and introduces the motorway network alongside rail. In 1975, further growth extends around the existing urbanised area and outward along several routes. The 1984, 1996, and 2008 maps record successive additions around the established urban area and at separated peripheral locations while the motorway and rail networks continue across the region. By 2018, additional growth from 2008 to 2018 appears around the urban margins and at several outlying locations, with motorway and rail routes extending through and beyond the urbanised area.
