The obstacles are deep, but still with deep-rooted privilege,
Obstacles have occurred all my life with the Portuguese language and with the other languages of the world, but even so I am privileged,
Limitations of location always far from destinations, but even so I am privileged,
But accounting came along and helped me gain access, financially and academically:
But accounting reinforced my white privilege:
Access to places,
Not being searched,
Not being chased in the supermarket–regardless of the region,
Not being questioned when accessing a lift,
Not being stopped in a blitz,
That they sympathised with me when I made a mistake,
A stray bullet not finding me.
When we discover that this privilege is structural and no matter what we do, we will be privileged. It's the pact of whiteness (Bento, 2022).
Reality catches up with us…
Are we looking for ways to recognise and repair privileges in Accounting?
I'm going to learn to read to teach my comrades (Mendes, 2021),
Learn to teach,
Not to reproduce daily racism,
Rethink how to speak–study racial literacy,
Fighting to make room for other non-white people to be part of and contribute to accounting science,
How are we working on this?
How do we plan to move forward?
The need for reparations in the face of history,
Accounting can be a possibility:
Collaborate and enable access,
Questioning our daily privilege (Schucman, 2020),
And in the spaces where we are, make this debate echo,
We will never know the pain, the obstacles and all the suffering!
But we can make other winds echo in our field, Accounting!
