First call for papers for Forthcoming International Conference: 25/26th September 2013

Henley Centre for Governance, Accountability & Responsible Investment,Henley Business School, Greenlands, Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, RG9 3AU.

Deadline for submission of papers 30th April 2013

The conference aims to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners in the broad area of corporate governance and accountability to discuss challenges in corporate governance in the 21st Century and whether corporate governance in an international context is ‘fit for purpose’. In the wake of the global financial crisis, corporations, banks, institutional investors, accountants and a wide array of corporate stakeholders are faced with immense challenges, juggling a difficult global financial environment with societal demands for enhanced accountability and transparency, as well as mounting pressures to shoulder responsibility for social and environmental impacts. Ethics has been highlighted as a core ingredient of ‘good’ corporate governance following substantial breaches in ethical behaviour within financial institutions and corporations worldwide. Public trust and confidence in financial services and in the corporate sector is at an all-time low. In the UK, the 2009 Walker Review raised deep concerns regarding executive remuneration and remuneration structures. The 2010 UK Stewardship Code set an agenda for greater engagement and dialogue by the institutional investment community. The Kay Review in 2012 illuminated a loss of confidence in the financial sector. Countries worldwide are developing Codes of Best Practice for Corporate Governance and focusing on improving mechanisms of transparency and risk management. Papers presented at the conference, as well as a number of key-note addresses from high profile academics and practitioners will engender a wide debate on ways to enhance governance and accountability, tackle unethical behaviour and nurture societal trust in companies and financial institutions.
