Art and the market have long danced together with a complicated rhythm, one often misunderstood. The former evokes notions of authenticity, resistance and beauty. The latter, of commodification, constraint and instrumental value. But this oversimplified and binary framing – art as inherently pure and the market as a corrupting force – is too crude to capture the nuanced, ambivalent and often promising interactions that take place where culture and art intersect with commerce. Rather than existing in opposition, art and market forces frequently intermingle in ways that can potentially foster creativity, challenge norms and even lead to social transformation.
