Shellac is one of the earliest materials used in protective and decorative coatings. This natural resin has properties not found in any other single natural or synthetic resin. It is particularly valued for the hardness, gloss and toughness of its films, and its excellent adhesion to a wide variety of surfaces such as wood, metal, paper, fabric etc. This versatile resin is still widely used for the varnishing and polishing of floors and furniture, leather paper, metal foil etc. A use developed recently for this resin is in the anti‐corrosive primers for steel and other ferrous metals.
