Three aspects of corrosion or oxidation in the field of transmission and distribution of electricity are discussed. The first concerns the sources of attack and the nature of corrosion on lead‐sheathed underground cables. An outline is then given of the corrosion problems on overhead transmission lines. The paper concludes with a reference to transformer oil oxidation and the problem of assessing the service behaviour of oil in transformers by means of preliminary laboratory tests. These three aspects have the common feature that, although not a major factor in interrupting supply to the consumer, the corrosion occurring leads to a need for more frequent replacement of materials and thereby increases the cost of power.
