Instant corrosion protection with Zerust bags

Automated Packaging Systems is now supplying cost-effective corrosion-inhibiting polythene bags on reels following a recent exclusive agreement with specialist film manufacturer Zerust (UK) Ltd. The bags provide immediate corrosion protection for small metal parts and are available for use on the company's reel-fed Autobag bagging systems throughout Europe.

Ian Dovey, Managing Director, said: "The simplicity of this method of protection is expected to offer significant savings in procedures, materials and labour for manufacturers whose products must be supplied in guaranteed corrosion-free condition. The bags will be of special value for spare parts and are expected to attract interest from the automotive and mobile plant industries in particular."

Two formulations of Zerust film are available, one for ferrous or steel products and the other for combinations of different metals.

For ease of identification, bags for the former are clear yellow and, for the latter, clear green.

For many products the new bags make traditional protective coatings ­ such as greasing for transit and storage (and de-greasing before use) ­ unnecessary.

The bags keep products clean, dry and ready for immediate use without the need for special handling procedures and chemicals.

Environmentally Zerust film is stated to be benign and recyclable, unlike traditional coatings which may create hazards by escaping into the air and onto surrounding surfaces and are irrecoverable.

According to the manufacturer it contains volatile corrosion-inhibiting constituents which emit a non-toxic vapour. In the enclosed atmosphere of a bag the vapour condenses and forms a microscopic layer of molecules on all the surfaces it can reach,passivating metal surfaces.

The inhibiting layer is believed to be maintained for at least five years while the product remains within the sealed Zerust bag. Electron-scanning tests show that when it is removed from the bag this layer re-volatilises from the product within two hours, leaving it clean, dry and corrosion-free.
