Kemira Coatings helps rescue industrial estate

Keywords Cladding,Coatings, Kemira Coatings

The restoration of cladding on an industrial estate in St Helens has been achieved with the aid of a specialist heavy duty coating from Kemira, Temaclad PV. A single pack modified acrylic finishing paint, this has been specially formulated for application to plastisol and polyester surfaces (Plate 5).

Broken and dingy cladding was one of the principal concerns of Allied London Properties plc when they acquired Haydock Cross, Kilbuck Lane, Haydock. Occupation was down and a rescue operation was urgently required.

Allied London Properties accordingly commissioned the design company, The Building A theme Company Ltd of Altrincham, to effect a wholesale improvement of the site, including landscaping, upgrading the lighting and providing gates, fences and a road barrier system to strengthen security.

Wherever the galbestos cladding was damaged, it was replaced with plastisol. The new sheets were primed with Temablast ET777, a two component polyvinyl butyral/epoxy etching primer. This was then overcoated with two coats of Temaclad PV. Undamaged galbestos was simply recoated with Temaclad PV, producing an identical semi-gloss appearance.

The general colour scheme was pale grey, with highlights in mid-blue, the nonstandard colours being specially mixed by Kemira to match the existing cladding.

"Using this Kemira system enabled us to retain much of the existing cladding and thus save time and money", said Colin Hayes, of Building A Theme. "Without the ability to repaint this type of cladding, the job would not have gone so smoothly. We also know that it will last well."

Temaclad PV series is reported to provide excellent resistance to ultra violet light through a combination of chemical and light fast pigments. Easily applied by spray, brush or roller, it also claims the advantage that it can be used on aluminium and galvanised substrates.
