A corrosion-resistant coating that reportedly outperforms chromium has been developed at MicroCoating Technologies, Chamblee, Georgia. The low-cost thin film coating is deposited via the open atmosphere Combustion Chemical Vapour Deposition (CCVD) patented process, and produces no toxic by-products.
According to the company, tests performed at Battelle Institute, showed that the product deposited on aluminium-coated steel withstood 1,344 hours of exposure to a 5 per centneutral salt fog with no evidence of oxidation products or pitting of the metal.
The CCVD process is a flame-assisted method that can be performed under ambient conditions without special equipment, environments, or chemicals. The process is also said to utilise inexpensive and environmentally friendly chemicals that enable closer control over the coating composition and physical properties.
