Mayflower takes leading role with new paint technology process

Mayflower Vehicle Systems has installed one of the first of a new generation of paint processes based on water-borne technology (Plate 2).

Water based primer-surfacer paint processes emit less ozone depleting solvent vapour than conventional paint systems.

Mayflower has installed new facilities at its paint plant in Holbrook Lane,Coventry, to handle and apply the new process following a two-year test and development programme to ensure customer approval with regard to adhesion,corrosion and chip resistance.

Gordon Boyd, the company's Managing Director, said: "Changes in paint technology have allowed us to look at a number of options, including the installation of afterburners to combust solvent emissions, converting them into carbon monoxide.

"The water-borne primer-surfacer was, without question, the most viable option. For every litre of primer paint used legislation stipulates that it must contain less than 250g solvent; with water based paint the solvent content is less than 60g/litre!"

Currently 80 percent of MVS paintshop work is already converted to the new process, with major projects being undertaken for Leyland Trucks and London Taxis.
