Transco reports that it chose Winn & Coales Denso systems for anti-corrosion protection of feeder pipes to and from its gas holders in Nottingham, Hull and Leeds. The work at Nottingham and Hull – now completed– was carried out by contractors SITE Coatings Ltd of Doncaster. Contractors for Leeds, where work is nearing completion, are Bagnalls Special Projects.

After cleaning by mechanical wire brushing, Denso paste was applied to the pipework within the gas holder pits. The pipes were then wrapped using 55 per cent overlap with Denso tape which is in turn overwrapped with Denso PVC self-adhesive tape. There are some sections at Nottingham and Leeds that are subject to periodic water build-up. In these cases the pipework was protected using Denso S105 paste and wrapped with Denso marine piling tape to give anti-corrosion protection.

SITE Coatings Ltd's managing director has stated that his preference for this type of corrosion protection includes ease of application, appearance, and value for its customers. They promote the use of Denso systems particularly in environmentally sensitive areas and in areas where the emissions of solvents from paint (in confined spaces) would cause a hazard. Owing to difficulty in arranging consents from environmental agencies this system is ideal, as a mechanical wire brush is sufficient preparation, saving grit blasting. He adds that "the Denso system can be applied quickly – saving time – and it gives protection for 30 years against the expected life of a paint system of seven to ten years, thus giving customers best value for money."

SITE Coatings have also used Winn & Coales' Steelcoat protective coating system on several canal and river crossings in Transco's East Midlands area. Again, the managing director stresses the advantages of being able to use mechanical wire brushing, thereby saving on the requirement for grit blasting.

It is also reported that 10-inch diameter pipework forming part of a new fire-fighting system at Conoco's Immingham refinery has been protected with Winn& Coales Denso Protal 7000 coating. Main contractors were UK Construction Ltd, with sub-contractors FK Multiservices Ltd being responsible for the application of the Denso Protal coating – specified by Conoco.

Brush application of Protal 7000 to some 300 metres of pipework and risers to give a 900-microns single coating was carried out at FK Multiservices'Middlesbrough works, before shipment to Immingham.

Denso Protal 7000 is said to provide an effective anti-corrosion coating by forming a thick physical barrier against air and moisture. It is said to be a highly thixotropic two-pack epoxy coating specifically formulated for the protection of steel pipelines.
