New application for high performance stainless steel
Keywords: Stainless steel, Corrosion prevention
A corrosion-abrasion resistant stainless steel, said to be known for its low-cost, long service life performance in materials handling and engineering applications, is being. used for the first time in a municipal incineration plant handling waste ash.A new silo, which forms part of a new clinical and municipal incineration plant, has been completely built in 3CR12 from Cromweld Steels, and was specified to provide effective corrosion- abrasion protection against the aggressively corrosive and wearing nature of the output ash from the incineration process (Plate 1).

It replaces the original plant, which had suffered considerable corrosion caused by the waste ash. According to Cromweld its 3CR12 was selected from a range of candidate materials due to its proven performance characteristics. The silo is insulated and clad, and is trace heated within the cone area to ensure that condensation cannot form from the introduction of hot ash into the relatively cool storage bin.
Portasilo Handling Systems, commission the new silo and outloading facility at the Sheffield Municipal Waste to Energy Plant for main contractor NNC. The silo is an integral part of the air pollution control system, handling 130M3 of variable and quite difficult product. Ash enters the silo via two large cyclones and is discharged through a bin-activator, which feeds a horizontal screw conveyor and tanker loading system.
In addition to 3CR12s claimed ability to multiply operation service life in materials handling applications, its surface quality and slide ability is said to have provided this system with clean-flow performance, reducing material blockages or hang-up, even where may be present. To date 3CR12 has reportedly been successfully used in handling; sugar beet, sugar cane, coal, gypsum, road salt, potash, peat and lime.
