The latest probe from ElektroPhysik for use with the "MiniTest 4100" series of coating thickness measurement instruments - designated the "FN 1.6P Powder Probe"- is said to measure the thickness of an uncured powder coating after application and prior to curing, without damaging the coating or leaving impression marks (Plate 3).

Attempts to perform this operation with a conventional probe invariably leave an impression in the cured coating. According to Sheen this new design avoids the problem by using a special plastic foil beneath the probe tip which reduces the pressure on the powder during measurement, thereby minimising the risk of marks or indentations after curing.

The base of the probe is raised slightly from the substrate by three fine pins - the minute holes made by these pins flow out automatically during the curing process. A constant contact pressure is applied to the probe tip during measurement which can be adjusted by the operator to suit each particular measurement circumstance.

The probe will reportedly measure powder thickness on ferrous or non-ferrous metal substrates up to a maximum of 1600pm (1.6mm) and is thought ideal for taking measurements on test panels. Resolution at the low end of the thickness scale is 0.1 m and tolerance is 1 per cent + 1 m. The probe is not suitable for use on curved surfaces.

The ElektroPhysik "FN 1.6P Powder Probe" is available from Sheen Instruments. Sheen Instruments can also supply a complete "PowderTest" package, comprising a"MiniTest 4100" coating thickness instrument, the new powder probe and a"MiniPrint 4100" portable printer. A probe for measuring dry cured powder coating thickness - the "FN2"- is also available.

New CD-ROM - Sheen Instruments has recently produced a CD-ROM detailing its comprehensive range of surface coating quality control instruments. Entitled"Keeping a close eye on quality". the CD is freely available on request from the company.
