Stress‐corrosion cracking of steel in nitrates. The production of nitrogen fertilisers has shown up some corrosion problems, particularly the intercrystalline stress‐corrosion cracking of carbon and low‐alloy steels in nitrates. This is allowed by the structure of carbon steels and related to their susceptibility to ageing. For cracking to occur, the corrosive environment must attack the material selectively, with the overall corrosion level remaining negligible, and tensile stresses of a certain magnitude must be acting within the material.
