A study by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards has shown that electrical measurements made in the laboratory can be generally useful in predicting the corrosion resistance of bolt materials used underground. The study, conducted by W. J. Schwerdtfeger of the Bureau's corrosion laboratory, is an application of earlier work which demonstrated that general corrosion rates can be measured electrically. The present laboratory study shows that some bolt materials can be protected against corrosion by making them cathodic to the structures which they fasten.
