Nickel plating is widely used for a variety of purposes, sometimes purely for aesthetic appearance, to give a bright, attractive surface. If the aim is simply sales appeal, normally the nickel will merely be an undercoat for chromium, since chromium plating adheres well to nickel, but not to most base metal, i.e., it is simply an essential intermediary.
