Corrosion and cost of rectification With all the precautions and treatments that are taken to prevent or retard corrosion in new aircraft, unfortunately, once in service it become a continuous maintenance problem. Prior to the introduction of the B747, we operated two different types of jet aircraft. Approximately 40% of the cost of a major overhaul on one of these types, can be attributed directly to the correction and prevention of corrosion, whereas only 20% is attributed to the other aircraft type.
