Introduction Corrosion continues to be a major problem, primarily because of the great variety of factors that influence a particular case, making rare the number of identical situations. Various metals and alloys are affected to different degrees and a corrosive attack can take many different forms. There may be a general tarnishing, or perforations in specially affected areas. It may develop preferentially close to the junctions of two different metals, or there could be a localised pitting attack. Corrosion can also be confined to crevices, under gaskets or washers or in sockets. The strength of a metal can be destroyed by cracking induced by corrosion. There are many situations.
