The quest by architects for the ultimate in paint treatments for structural components — windows and door frames, partitioning etc… — where the need for colour variety is increasing, plus the demand for ever longer guarantees from suppliers, has been causing pressure on pretreaters for more sophisticated systems. The author, of ICI pretreatment department, has been looking into the effects of this on aluminium extrusions in an attempt to clarify possible misconceptions, reassert some basic principles, and describe appropriate pretreatment methods.
