The study of the properties of metallic surfaces has been given much attention in recent years. Such general subjects as corrosion, thermal oxidation and friction have been investigated in detail by specialised organisations throughout the world. As a result, a good deal is known about the factors controlling the nature and effects of corrosion and other surface properties, but, due to the complexity of the problems, specific solutions only affecting well‐defined cases have been advanced by the theoretical workers. Much of the practical research is left to the technologists in various branches of surface treatments
