While phosphating treatments of sheet metals have been widely developed for different industries, and are extensively used by the automobile industry in particular, still further improvements have recently been made for associated purposes. In general, these processes, protected by patent rights, form a seal which prevents moisture reaching the metal and causing electrolysis, but strictly speaking, the phosphate film itself is not rust‐proofing. Its main function in some directions is to act as a seating for paint and enamel, retaining adhesion and flexibility, and preventing ageing, but it also serves for alternative applications.
