CORROSION COMMENTARY

RECORD NICKEL PRODUCTION. Nickel is a metal of immense industrial importance both for military and civilian needs. Last year saw a record in its production: 450 million lb. were produced in the free world. This represents an increase of over 100 million lb. since 1954. In addition to this, the United States' government arranged for the diversion to industry of large supplies of the metal which had been originally detailed for the government stockpile. The distribution of this record output was very similar to that of previous years; about 65% went to the United States and the remainder to the United Kingdom, Canada and other Western countries.
