CORROSION COMMENTARY

Future requirements for the teaching of corrosion science were outlined by Dr. T. P. Hoar at a recent meeting of the Society of Chemical Industry's Corrosion Group. ‘It all boils down to “who should teach whom what?”’ he said. Universities, technical colleges and junior technical colleges should all provide some facilities for the teaching of corrosion science and it would be desirable to include some very elementary instruction in schools. Referring to ‘whom,’ Dr. Hoar considered that engineers are unsuitable recipients of corrosion science teaching. He was strongly of the opinion that fundamental principles should be inculcated at universities and technical colleges and questioned whether a smattering of knowledge of the subject is a good thing in the long run. ‘You cannot get a fully‐blown corrosion scientist except by a fully‐disciplined course,’ he said. It was necessary not to lose sight of fundamental research, and he suggested there should be more getting together between those who deal with ‘beaker corrosion’ and those who deal with ‘process corrosion.’
