Epoxy Deck on Schooner. A new deck coating, based on Union Carbide epoxy resins, has been added to Vema, the 37‐year‐old, three‐masted American research schooner belonging to Columbia University's Lamont Geological Observatory. The coating was selected for the steel deck to protect it from salt‐water corrosion, sun and the extreme temperature changes encountered in sailing from sub‐freezing to 130°F. temperatures in tropic waters. An abrasive in the coating provides a non‐skid surface.
