The production of light ‐ duty coloured decorative finishes on aluminium and its alloys by means short of anodising has always been something of a problem, although most metal finishing companies have undertaken some experimental work on this subject. The approach usually adopted involved the dyeing of a chromate film, and the main difficulties were in obtaining uniformity and sufficient depth of colour.
