Sandvik issues new selection guide for wirelines

A new technical selection guide for its range of stainless steel wirelines for the oil and gas industry has been issued by Sandvik Steel.
As oil and gas is produced from wells with ever greater depths, Sandvik Steel has seen significant growth in the demand for its stainless steel wireline programme. This is because many wells operate in severely corrosive conditions caused by a combination of carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide and chlorides combined with high pressure and temperature. Under these conditions wirelines of conventional carbon steels and lower alloyed stainless steels have limitations on use.
In the new six-page guide Sandvik claims that, although the initial cost of stainless wirelines is higher,significant savings can be achieved when comparing losses incurred by wireline breakage and lost production time. Even in wells with moderately corrosive conditions, multi-use stainless wirelines can be economically attractive.
Various well conditions are described and a Sandvik wireline material grade recommended for each different operating environment. The chemical analysis and physical properties are shown for each wire grade available, together with the breaking load and wire weight for a range of wire diameters. There are formulae for calculating wire line stretch and effective breaking load and a table calculating spiral line loss, for a range of tube diameters, when a line failure occurs.
The guide also includes comprehensive handling instructions for minimising mechanical damage and extending wireline life.
As well as the A4 publication, Sandvik has produced "pocket" versions (160mm deep × 100mm wide) for both the selection guide and the wireline handling instructions.
