The 1998 Galvanizing Awards
Each country in the British Isles was represented at the sixth annual Hot Dip Galvanizing Awards ceremony held in London recently. For the £1,000 winner, the three judges chose a covered play/assembly area at a school in a London conservation area. A conservatory in Wales, a football stadium in Ireland and a horse sculpture in Scotland received £250 Highly Commended awards.
The first prize was shared between Dols Wong Architects and Barton Engineers for a covered colonnade at the Anglo-Spanish school in Portobello, London. Their bold design comprises galvanized steel columns and wooden trusses with fabric roofing to form an area that can be used for many purposes including five-a-side football or school assembly.
A new stand at Windsor Park football stadium in Belfast received a Highly Commended award for Belfast designers Ferguson McIlveen. Hot dip galvanizing was chosen for its long,maintenance-free life but Ferguson McIlveen were pleased to discover that it was price competitive with a paint system even though the beams were too long for local galvanizers and had to be taken to Glasgow.
Sanders & Stonebridge also received a Highly Commended prize for the galvanized steel and glass conservatory they designed for a private house in Denbigh, Wales. Joining a garage and a house, the structure is a good example of the use of different materials for a domestic application.
A new landmark has sprung up besides the M8 in Glasgow a 6m high sculpture of a Clydesdale called The Heavy Horse. Its creator, Andy Scott of Glasgow Sculpture Studios,earned the third Highly Commended prize for this magnificent beast made from welded galvanized steel bars (Plate 1). Its wires shine silver during the day and gleam white in the moonlight.
The judges ware Ian Ritchie of Ian Ritchie Architects, Dr Derek Tordoff, director of the British Constructional Steel Association and Murray Cook, director of Galvanizers Association.
