Lowestoft Harbour gets the Denso treatment

Keywords Denso,Marine corrosion, Pipes

In the early 1960s a tunnel was constructed under Lowestoft Harbour as being the most efficient and least disruptive means of carrying service pipes from one half of the Suffolk town to the other. The ductile iron service pipes include a 600mm sewage rising main which splits into two, a 450mm water pipe and a 450mm inverted syphon. These enter a 20m drop shaft alongside the habour entrance and then pass along a 52m tunnel, which is buried nine metres below the river bed, to emerge via a second 20m drop shaft on the other side of the harbour entrance.

Contractors May Gurney Construction Ltd, under the supervision of Waveney District Council, are currently carrying out the first renovation programme since the drop shafts and tunnel were constructed. This includes replacement of most pipe sections.

Winn & Coales' Denso materials were chosen to protect pipe joints to a PI specification. This comprises Denso profiling mastic followed by application of Denso tape to give protection for another 30 years in this highly corrosive marine environment(Plate 2).
