Elcometer Instruments Ltd,the Manchester-based specialist in instrumentation for the testing and quality control of coatings, has a new oven-logger to record the temperature profile of ovens used to cure powder paint (Plate 2).
The temperature profile of the powder-coating oven is vitally important in achieving a good quality coating. The new Elcometer 215 Oven-logger will record the temperature values,at a pre-set time interval, from up to six thermocouple probes placed on the component as it and the oven-logger pass through the oven. With a memory capacity of up to 20,000 readings divided into eight batches, this battery-powered unit has a battery life of 200 hours.
The oven-logger is supplied as a kit with the Elcometer Oven-Logger Software (EOLS), four probes and an insulated box so that the oven-logger is ready for use. EOLS allows the oven-logger to be programmed via an RS232 interface so that the recording time interval can be adjusted to suit the curing requirement. If required, the cure specification can be downloaded so that the results of the test can be assessed against the specification and a pass/fail indication made by a LED on the oven-logger.
After the test, the data stored in the oven-logger can be uploaded to EOLS for further analysis and charting. Details of the test, such as the location of the probes on the workpiece, can be added to the data file and a full analysis of the oven temperature profile with time can be produced. The oven-logger also has an infra-red printer output and data can be sent to a Hewlett-Packard Infra-red Portable Printer without the need to make a physical connection.

Several different thermocouple probe options are available including a clamped air probe to measure the air temperature in the oven near to the workpiece, a magnetic probe for a steel workpiece and a clamp style surface probe. A calibration certificate is available as an option, showing the results for each of the six channels for a set of four temperature values.
