Industry boosts successful launch of new code

Chromium platers are being encouraged to sign up to a new chromium code of approved practice (CCAP) setting higher industry standards, which was launched by the Metal Finishing Association with a special presentation at the NEC.
The Code, planned and developed by the Process Technology Group of the MFA, provides advice on the safe operation of electroplating processes in compliance with COSHH regulations,the Environmental Protection Act, and Health and Safety legislation. All companies joining the scheme must agree to adhere to the practices outlined in the new CCAP.
Graham Orgill, Chairman of the MFA Process Technology Group, told a packed launch event in the NEC's Griffin Suite: "This new code provides a starting point for companies which understand the risks involved in working with hexavalent chromium, but are taking all measures to reduce them. In short, we are showing everyone that we are proactive. It is a clear message to the end-user that we also care deeply about the environment. We are a responsible industry."
Although there are several compounds of chromium, each with different degrees of risk, chromium plating involves only hexavalent and trivalent chromium, and the risks associated with these chemicals can be greatly minimised by proper handling. Companies signing up to the code will guarantee that their operations comply with all safety standards under the CCAP and offer an assurance of quality so that their customers will be able to use these registered suppliers with a clear conscience.
On behalf of the Surface Engineering Association, of which the MFA are members, David James, CEO, told delegates: "Most of the industry discussions so far have focused on the dangers and/or drawbacks of chrome. The environmental lobby, in particular, has not looked at the true balance of harm and benefits. Chromium plating significantly extends the life of components, so any perceived detriment in finishing the original component is outweighed by reduced consumption and the processing of other raw materials."
Chromium coatings also act as wear resistant and lubricious coatings on pistons, cylinders, valves, etc. all part of the current engineering design and requirement. These are enjoying a fashionable boost in fortune from the new automotive styling needs.
The MFA's Process Technology Group worked closely with trade platers, consultants, the Health& Safety Executive, the Environment Agency and other industry bodies to develop the CCAP. Further work refining the final Code was undertaken by the insurance industry body the Loss Prevention Council who acted as sponsor.
Four companies attending the event agreed to sign up to the new Code during the official launch. All members of the MFA who are involved in chromium plating will be encouraged to enrol.
