New alkane sulfonyls plant

Keywords Elf Atochem, Chemicals

Elf Atochem recently brought on stream a new methane sulfonic acid 70 per cent (MSA) plant with an initial capacity of 4,000 tpa at its Mourenx site (Pyrénées-Atlantiques,south-western France).

An anhydrous MSA production plant with a capacity exceeding 1,000 tpa already operates on this site, as well as a methane sulfonyl chloride (MSC) plant whose capacity was increased to 3,000 tpa in 1998.

Until now Elf Atochem has manufactured methane sulfonic acid 70 per cent in the USA at its Riverview(Michigan) plant, which also produces methane sulfonyl chloride (MSC).

The Mourenx site is using the same Elf Atochem technology for its MSA 70 per cent as the US plant.

This FFr100 m capital investment project will help Elf Atochem fulfil the demand for MSA and MSC from its European customers, while its new overall production capacities will enable the company to meet the projected growth in world demand for these products as well as for higher sulfonyl alkanes.
