Coating provides resistance to erosion corrosion

Nickel-titanium patches explosively bonded to steel utility components provide a significant improvement in resistance to cavitation and liquid droplet erosion, according to the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), Palo Alto, California. Materials likely to be highly resistant to erosion corrosion were identified during long-term research at EPRI that established a correlation between erosion resistance and material fatigue properties.

This work led to the selection of nickel-titanium for the patches, and the explosive bonding process was then developed and tested. The process is available for demonstration in applications such as patching erosion-prone areas of turbine blades.
