Worksop Galvanizing Ltd has won a major contract for treating steel that will be going from one extreme end of the temperature scale to another.
The company is hot-dip galvanizing 2,000 tonnes of structural steel beams, heavy columns and bracing members a process which prolongs the life of metal by covering it with a metallurgically-bonded zinc coating. To do this involves the steel being immersed in a bath containing molten zinc heated by furnace to a temperature as high as 445oC.
In contrast, when delivered, much of the finished product will be sited in a far cooler clime because the steel is for a new warehouse being built in Middlesex, for a leading national supplier of frozen foods, where in many parts the thermometer reads well below zero.
The galvanizing is being carried out for Wescol Glosford plc, structural engineering, of Halifax, West Yorkshire. The five-month contract includes steel up to 18 metres long.
Another big contract is for galvanizing 2,000 tonnes of structural steel, with some beam columns weighing 3 tonnes each, for fitting in a different type of working environment a large glassworks in North Yorkshire.
Worksop Galvanizing employs 50 people and is one of 17 companies of nationwide Wedge Group Galvanizing. It has the largest hot dip bath within the group and specialises in handling large steel structures and lighting columns.
