Environmentally friendly heavy duty coating for nuclear power station

Keywords Coatings, Environmentally friendly, Kemira, Powerplants

The upgrading of existing conventional paint finishes in the four blower halls of the reactor area of Dungeness "A" nuclear power station has been carried out in an environmentally friendly, water-based, Kemira heavy duty coating. The contract covered the complete internal redecoration of ceilings, walls and a flooring area of approximately 4,000 square metres.

The product chosen was Temashield WBV, a two-component high build water-based epoxy finish. EPA Compliant-1998, it is widely used in hospitals, food factories, pharmaceutical and other industries where low odour, non-tainting products are required.

"It provides a hard wearing, glossy, easily cleaned finish with good chemical resistance", explained Stan Ainsley of CLC Contractors Ltd, Southampton, who carried out the work for BNFL Magnox Generation. "It also has the advantage that it can be applied with less disruption to the client's workforce than occurs with solvent based products. Its outstanding adhesion also makes it particularly suitable for upgrading conventional coatings, as at Dungeness."

Temashield WBV Series is available in white, pastel colours and selected BS 4800 and RAL shades. Dungeness "A" was redecorated in 08.B.15 Magnolia.
