The Steel Protection Consultancy (SPC) is expanding. The consultancy is opening a new northern UK office and has appointed Keith Umpleby, a coatings expert with specialist knowledge in the civil construction and oil and gas related industries, as a senior consultant (Plate 1).

"SPC's new office is ideally situated to better serve customers throughout the north of England and Scotland", says David Deacon, director of SPC. "Keith is a qualified paint chemist and has experience with all types of high performance protective coatings. His additional experience with other methods of corrosion control perfectly complements the consultancy's existing team of experts which includes Derek Bayliss and Alan Taylor".

Keith worked in the oil industry for ten years where he was a consultant to major offshore oil and gas companies and responsible for corrosion control systems for British National Oil Corporation and then Britoil during much of its British North Sea development programme in the 1980s. Most recently he has been involved with the development of coatings compliant with the Environmental Protection Act and other legislation relating to VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and solvents which came into force during 1998.
