Polymer coating improves corrosion resistance of pipe fittings

A thermoplastic polymer used to treat pipe fittings, flanges and bolts, significantly reduces corrosion during service, according to treatment specialists Stokes Coatings. Rilsan Nylon 11 is said to be an inert coating which can be applied to individual fasteners as well as pipe fittings up to 2,000mm in diameter. Once applied, Rilsan claims to provide permanent protection against corrosion, cathodic disbondment and salt spray. Components can be assembled in trenches or fixed above ground, since Rilsan is wear resistant, UV stable and remains unaffected by a wide range of solvents. Rilsan is stated to be fully approved to WIS 4:52:01, WRc, DWI (Reg 25) and European regulations (Plate 2).

Stokes informs us that because Rilsan can be applied in a single process, to give a permanent,corrosion protective coating, no on-site finishing is required. Flanges and fittings do not need to be wrapped in protective tape, frequently used by contractors. By doing away with the application of tape significant time savings, and guaranteed consistency of protection, are achieved.

The Stokes Coatings facility in Mansfield, which was acquired recently by TM Products, also operates a high volume coating facility for fasteners. The corrosion protection provided was believed to be the first to meet the WIS 4:52:03 standard and also conforms to the regulations mentioned above.
