High-integrity tube fittings optimised for aggressive media applications

Parker Hannifin reports that it has extended the versatility of its high-integrity CPI compression tube fittings, with new exotic alloy versions to assure corrosion-free performance in a fuller range of fluid instrumentation applications. Now available in alloys 400, Titanium and Hastelloy - as well as standard 316 stainless steel and brass - the new materials allow users to optimise the protection against many kinds of aggressive media found in chemical, oil, gas and other processes.
Typical applications include oil and gas instrumentation systems exposed to sulphur and H2S, defending against exposure to saline in watercooling systems and fire-fighting equipment on offshore platforms, and withstanding the effects of acid, ethanol or halide solutions as found in many chemical, pharmaceutical and pulp processing plants.
CPI claims to be the only instrumentation-grade tube fitting on the market which makes its seal via a single rather than twin ferrule arrangement. This halves the number of potential leak paths in the connection, dramatically boosting safety, reliability and integrity, and also simplifying assembly and maintenance.
Long-term seal performance and reliability of CPI tube fittings are said to be further aided by Parker's Suparcase treatment, which hardens the ferrule so that it can bite into the tubing and make the seal without opening up an avenue for corrosion. All the commonly-used hardening techniques - chrome plating, work hardening or chemical edge treatment -- weaken a metal's corrosion resistance in some fashion. Suparcase treatment claims to eliminate this potential weakness by means of an infusion which penetrates for a few microns only and does not affect the underlying molecular structure of the base material.
CPI -- Chemical Petroleum Industries - fittings are available in metric and Imperial sizes, for outside diameter tubing from 3 to 25mm or 1/16 to 2 inches. A wide choice of body styles are offered for simple and efficient tubing system design, including straight unions, reducing unions, elbow joints, cross- and tee connections, and adaptors for interfacing to threaded pipework.
To support progress, CPI single ferrule tube fittings are completely interchangeable with other popular fitting ranges, allowing users to migrate their instrumentation tubing systems to high integrity fittings gradually over time, as normal maintenance procedures are carried out.
As standard, stainless steel and titanium CPI nuts are coated with molybdenum disulphide which leaves them coloured black for easy identification. This coating also acts as a lubrication, so that assembly requires only a similar torque level to conventional twin ferrule fittings. Silver plated nuts are provided as standard on other alloys, but may also be specified as an option on stainless steel. Parker offers a full range of accessories to support CPI use,including tube fabrication equipment, sealants and gauges to verify correct make-up.
