Sandvik promotes flat wire

Keywords: Sandvik, Wire, Steel

Flat rolled wire, as opposed to narrow strip steel, is produced by AB Sandvik Steel with either round edges or sharp rolled edges with rounded corners. Compared to strip steel, it claims better fatigue strength and a smaller bending radius permitting sharper bends. Typical applications are the manufacture of windscreen wiper blades, piston spacer expansion rings in car engines, medical instruments and springs for industrial equipment or domestic appliances (Plate 3).

A new technical brochure on its stainless steel flat wire range has been produced by AB Sandvik Steel.

The new six-page brochure details the size range available and the dimensional straightness and edge roundness tolerances which can be supplied. Standard stainless steel grades produced are listed, together with the chemical analysis, mechanical and physical properties for each grade. There are also comments on performance criteria for each grade covering tensile and fatigue strength, formability, temperature and corrosion resistance and examples of typical end use applications.

An additional table shows the minimum bending radii for a range of flat wire thicknesses and there is a graph and formula for calculating the "spring back"factor during the bending operation.

An investment of nearly MSEK20 (US$2.5m) has enabled AB Sandvik Steel to install and commission a new rolling mill for stainless steel flat wire at its manufacturing site in Sandviken, Sweden. Key benefits of the new plant are excellent material straightness, close dimensional tolerances and consistent material quality.
