Elastomer-coated bins and bollards reduce maintenance

Street furniture, such as seats, bollards, signposts, litter bins and lighting are being protected with polyurethane elastomer supplied by Hyperlast Limited (Plate 1). Besides its traditional cast iron ware, the Cast Iron Company, based in Middlesex, offers the Polycast range and has supplied thousands of miles of such milings and bollards for local authorities across the UK. The Polycast items are reported to resist the ravages of the elements and the wear-and-tear of shopping trolleys and vandals, so reducing authorities'maintenance expenditure.

Cast Iron's managing director, Gary Young, says:

the beauty of using Hyperlast® for our street furniture is that it is tough and durable. It is just the material we were looking for to replace cast iron in many areas of extra wear-and-tear. The use of polyurethane means less maintenance than with metal; it is virtually weatherproof. It does not rust and has good hydrolysis resistance as well as being flame-retardant.

Hyperlast has proved to be effective as the colour is contained right through the product, so there is no need to re-paint the furniture if it becomes chipped or damaged. The material is very strong and stands up to the salty atmosphere of seaside towns and provides almost total resistance to abrasion and impact.
