Alloys for tough environments

Keyword: Brush Wellman

A new range of ToughMet copper-nickel-tin spinodal bronze alloys has a range of properties considered ideal for use in aggressive environments (Plate 1). According to Brush Wellman minimal corrosion rates, exceptional strength and resistance to fatigue failure, natural anti-fouling and anti-galling properties are characteristics that will result in improved and extended service life in many applications.

The ToughMet range is also stated to be resistant to corrosion in sour environments and combines high strength, good ductility and a low coefficient of friction. Able to withstand ten times (10 x) the loading of C96500 aluminium bronze, ToughMet alloys are also reported to be ideal applications where long bearing/wear life is desired.

Brush Wellman employs a patented EquaCast process to continuous cast the ToughMet alloy structure. Rod, bar, tube and billet can also be supplied together with continuous casting in complex shapes that save both materials costs and machining time.
